Espresso Grinder Buying Guide
Your grinder is arguably more important than your espresso machine. A great grinder paired with a modest machine will always outperform a premium machine paired with a poor grinder.
What to Look For
- Burr type — flat vs conical, stainless vs titanium-coated
- Burr diameter — larger burrs run cooler and grind faster
- Grind adjustment — stepless vs stepped; number of settings
- Retention — how much coffee stays in the grinder between doses
- RPM — lower RPM reduces heat transfer to the grinds
- Single-dosing — dedicated single-dose grinders vs hopper-fed
